Mike G,

You're absolutely right. No dad should be asked by his kids to take them fishing. When my wife and I have children they'll have no choice but to go;-)

There are probably not a lot of dad's out there like you who would take there kids fishing whenever they wanted. Opening day or not.

But, opening day is still needed more than ever. Two words: VIDEO GAMES

I like the idea of having a closed season on bass during the spawn ,it would actually protect fish at a time they nedd protection \:D

and than just think ,opening day would be for bass in the middle of June \:D Perfect time for families to get out together because the weathter is so nice.

pluss bass are much harder to catch than farm raised trout and actually do reproduce naturally \:D

No opening day on bass.... whats next? 9IN MINIMUM LENGTH ON BLUEGILLS?

We need to go through the laws and abolish all the nonsense ones like mass and Ny have done- if your worried about revenue start charging people for permits to fish reservoirs and have an attendant there 24/7 walking the lake and issuing tickets FOR ANY type of trash- people would pay some big money to fish any reservoir year round. Hell it could even be no boats- mass has been doing this for 5 years and it hasnt effect water quality in the slightest bit- they dont even charge to fish the water supplys just no wading or boating.

Never stop trying, What you desire is waiting just around the corner.

I enjoy opening day immensely and would hate to see it abolished altogether but after what I saw this past weekend maybe they should change a couple of things.
First off I think they should give kids, and only kids, the opportunity to fish the Sunday before opening day. Put a two trout per kid limit and let them have it. Any lreagl sized trout caught should be kept which brings me to point two.
This past weekend I watched grown men catch their two fish each, put them on the stringer, and continue to catch trout after trout. That should be illegal. At least half the fish they released floated down the Farmington, it was disgusting and they could not have cared less. Meanwhile there were at least a dozen kids watching them and were not catching a thing. They set a great example. To make things worse a "biologist" who was surveying people told them and everyone just keep catching them, as long as you release them you are not breaking the law.
Other than that it was still great to get together with my Dad on the opener and catch a couple of fish. Alright I lied, I only caught one, but still had a great time.

I agree with those who would eliminate it and spread the stocking throughout the season.

are you for real ??? That is the most absurd comment I have read on this post !!!

opening day needs to be a thing of the past ,just look at all the trash left on the banks of our waters from last weekend, and the season is not even a week old yet \:o

Personally, I think enough of our traditions have been lost by all the progressives who all have their own selfish agendas to promote. KIDS benefit the most from having an opening day, PERIOD!!!! I remember not being able to sleep the night before- seeing relatives I usually didn't see- hearing their same goofy stories- My father taking no overtime that day(My Dad worked alot, he had too), So many wonderful memories, I'll carry to my grave. Many changes in the regs so that You can fish for trout somewhere anytime to accomodate those who wish to do so. I read this as people worried there will be a few less trout for THEM to catch by continuing the opening day tradition. The fishing in this state is great for those that apply themselves, just read the posts and look at the photos. If You want to improve the fishing, get involved with trout unlimited and other environmental groups to try and clean our waters and set aside open space and improve access etc.. Let's worry about what's real important like that red haired lad hoisting that beautiful trout on the homepage. How many kids across the state will always have memories of " the opening day that".. Come on, really!!

Too many peopel fish hard opening daya nd this year there were way less trout stocked plain and simple. the state skimped due to low water level and it hurt fisherman and there kids bad- so many kids will never wanango fishing again because they didnt catcha single fish in the 2 or 3 hours they spent. Kids have a short attention span and when they see someone catching fish and there not they get even mroe flustered. I havent seena single stringer witha limit so far this year.... Last year i released over 80 fish on saturday and sunday of openign day. Thats all I have to say.
