And some not so small shops as well... Well, maybe not our entire budget, but it definitely means a lot to anyone that sells tackle.

I'll be out there on opening day with my son Luke. He's 3 years old and can't wait to get out there. He's been casting his Cars fishing rod in the house for weeks.

We don't really ever get out for the opener. I am not crazy about the first 2 weeks of the season because the competition for a "good" fishing spot can draw out the best in people and that's not a side of fishing I'm ready to expose my kids to.
We still hit some of the less fished areas(depending on my work schedule) but don't venture too much into the highly stocked and pressured areas.

You really have to be on your toes as far as the location when taking kids out opening day.I can not count the times I have seen incredibly inapropriate behaviour at 6 a.m. from guys who have been drinking since 3 a.m.....really? The trout parks and small brooks are probably the safest bet from keeping your 6 year old girl from seeing something she should not see for another 15 years. I have to go with Danny and Old school on this one,if there was a vote.Shameful...yes? shocked

I really dont care much for bob sampson (a former fish biologist), or even the fisheries biologist people, its nothing personal, i just dont like what they do for fishing in the state.

yea, I really dont know why people would go out on opening day and even further, even get started in trout fishing. I never see people catching fish when i go out for opening day other than at a few places which are over stocked and crowded (mashapaug, farmington river, TMAs, kids ponds, etc). What I see are lots of kids and families fishing near home at local fishing areas who go home and give up after never catching fish or even seeing a fish caught the entire day. The only times I see people catch fish there spots are the "magic" groups people which flock there right after the stocking truck goes by in may, its amazing how word goes round to people who are 'in the loop' ... Its all priorities i guess. As for the lack of stocking, i dunno, I always read how there are low water levels before opening day prevent stocking, but everyone knows that BS and there are plenty of areas that don't get stocked that are deep. For Example, Willimantic river, a very deep river, at south river road, has 100 or more people or so for opening day and no one ever catches a fish the entire morning, yet 15 years ago, everyone caught fish. Anyway.. Couple the lack of catching fish with decreasing public access, mercury warnings on eating fish, the decreasing value of a dollar, salt water license... well, its not going to be long before more trends are noticed other than people not just going out for opening day.

I'm gonna go the opposite way and say I see plenty of people on opening day the last 5 years. Every year I take my daughter down to Great Hollow and we usually can't find a spot it's so packed.
I see people all over the Pequonnock on opening day.

I don't know if maybe I was just younger and didn't know any different at the time, but it sure seems like my first dozen opening days had more fish around than my last dozen.

I got tired of looking for places with fish that used to be stocked regularly and now seems more hit-and-miss. That plus the crowds, the litter and the general ciaos of it all.

Now I'd rather be able to fish through the closed season portion than have an opening day, as we a forced to miss out on some great weeks of fishing....and not just for trout.

Still, while I don't participate in it like I used to, I can still see the value in it for kids. Opening day anticipation is hard to top and I remember not being able to fall asleep for years. That feeling is quickly tarnished however when poor sportsmanship seems to be more the rule than the exception now. Watching grown men elbow kids out of a trout-park spot just seems silly to me.

One thing they should do either way....is not start opening day the week AFTER all the kids have spring vacation. Want to get kids outside and into fishing....let "kids only" fish the week before the opener. It should be about the kids IMHO.

On the other hand - it's a money maker, no doubt. Stop opening day and license sales will drop like a rock.

....If we have any say... Vote for May

....AGREED,the youth only hunting days has been a fairly sucessful program(turkey, pheasant and waterfowl).I think a 12 year old age and under prior to opening day would be a great event, certain areas,DEC guys on hand etc.
