Candidates "by reason of their occupation or other experience, scientific expertise, or training, must be knowledgeable regarding the conservation and management, or the commercial or recreational harvest, of the fishery resources of (New England)." There are two upcoming vacancies, one seat is obligated to the State of Connecticut, and one at-large seat is open to nominations from any New England state.

The at-large seat is currently held by Glen A. Libby of Maine, who is completing his first term. Each term is for three years and there is a three term limit of continuous service.

The New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) is one of eight regional councils that manage our nation’s marine fisheries seaward of state territorial waters. Responsibilities include the development of fishery management plans that are submitted to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Secretary of Commerce for approval and implementation. NEFMC develops management plans for several species important to Connecticut, including winter flounder, sea scallops, monkfish, Atlantic herring and whiting.

Qualified individuals interested in being considered for nomination to the Council should provide a resume of their fisheries related experience to David Simpson at david.simpson@ct.gov by February 1, 2012. Nominees must complete a comprehensive application that will be provided by the CT DEP Marine Fisheries Division and that includes a philosophy statement, resume and a financial disclosure statement.
