So just a heads up and would be interested to see the response. DEP stocked trout down the ramp of a certain marina in Brookfield around 9 days ago, you can look it up and I don't want to say the exact spot. I talked to the owner of the marina and he actually talked to the truck. He was even leery and questioned them dumping so many trout almost on shore and just in the open small shoreline. Well we had a huge thaw the last two days and I was there this AM and there are a ton of dead trout and the birds are having a feast!
Just stinks with all the talks of hatcheries closing and lack of future stockings that this happened. The same area is stocked every year without incident.

Hypoxia. This happened on Ball Pond a few years ago when they stocked through the ice at the boat launch where the cove is very shallow, full of dead weeds, and is the first spot to freeze and the last to thaw. Ideal conditions for hypoxic conditions where all of the dissolved oxygen is used up by decaying weeds, etc. and a rough winter that allows no oxygen replenishment. I made arrangements for the stocking truck to use a vacant private lot on the west side of the pond where the shore drops off into 20 feet of water and into the main basin and this is now the new stocking location for Ball Pond. It also gets the trout into deep water so that the comorants can't herd them into the corners of the shallow cove and gorge on them. I know the location you are referencing from being on the stocking crew a number of years ago and normally in open water there are no problems but this year nothing should have been stocked there through the ice. The only stocking locations should have been near deep water like Squantz Pond state park and Lynn Demming. Inland Fisheries needs to know this happened.

I was amazed they stocked there George. It is normally locked in with weeds open water and is very shallow with a very gradual drop in depth, but that doesn't happen for quite a few yards out. What a waste.

So kind of hard to see but my neighbor has a zoom camera that shows the fish a lot better on the ice. The gulls inn the background have fish on the ice and there were around 40 floating Sat. AM.

Buck, etc., Thanks for the passing on your observations. It goes without saying that anytime recently stocked trout are reported dead, we take it to heart. That being said, please keep in mind that the state hatcheries stock ~350,000 trout prior to the Opening Day of trout season. By now, hopefully everyone on this site and around the state is aware that the trout fishing Opening Day has been moved up one week this year, to the second Saturday in April (i.e., April 11, 2015). It is important to keep in mind that this new opener brings increased pressure on the Inland Fisheries Division to try do our best and still get those 350K fish stocked out for OD, but now in one week’s less time. Given the extremely thick ice conditions and snow depth on lakes, frozen rivers and streams, intensely cold temperatures in early March, and below normal average temps. throughout March, I’m sure it comes as no surprise to regulars on this site, that stocking conditions this year have been unprecedented in regards to increased difficulty. Despite all of these setbacks and reduced staffing at our hatcheries, DEEP staff has done an absolutely incredible feat of “getting the job done”! For the record, the location in question, where the reported dead trout have been observed, was stocked several times over that last month, with the two most recent stockings this past Thurs. and Fri (April 2 and 3). At that time the open water along the shoreline extended out for approximately 200 feet. This should have allowed plenty of open and oxygenated water and opportunity for the fish to move out into deeper water. Our best guess is that if any problems did occur, it was most likely from an earlier stocking on 3/19. At that time the lake level was considerably lower and there was only a very small area of open water along the edge, in this area of the lake. Staff in charge of the stocking that day made the decision to stock and it appeared that the fish were in good condition (alive and swimming) when the stocking was completed. However, recent sightings and hindsight would suggest that this may not have been the case. This is unfortunate and all of us here at the DEEP Inland Fisheries Div. take these incidents seriously. That being said, only 30-40 dead trout (we have not heard if anyone observed more than this?) out of a total of 350K successfully stocked, would be considered a great “track record” by any and all accounts.
Again, it is unfortunate and we are sorry to hear that some of our hard earned, hatchery raised trout will not be available for anglers to catch and or harvest come Opening Day of trout fishing. However, Candlewood Lake has been successfully stocked with approximately 10,000 trout for Opening Day of 2015, despite the worst conditions many of us have observed in over 30 years.

Thank you Tim. If it was stocked early April then that is good and those probably made it without issue. The one mid March does puzzle me. It was locked up pretty tight, I live in Candlewood Acres and am at the beach alot. The water level was still down a bit as well. The ramp they stock at is very shallow and there isn't a drop for a good 200-300 feet off. We saw dead fish get eaten when it thawed a bit and they were feeding for a good 4-5 days so my round about 50 is just what we probably saw being eaten. I would guess that early stocking had a very little survival rate at all. Again just don't know why they would of chose there when the low water and thick ice, obviously didn't work.
And sorry for the negative reaction you guys do the best you can , just hurts seeing that and would of thought a deeper spot would of made sense.

Tim, again thanks for all you folks do with what you have and what you have to deal with. The state fisheries personnel I've met and talked with are very serious about their work. Thanks!
