Several years ago there was a piece of property in Waterford that was owned by the DOT and stocked with pheasant. With the consolidation of the pheasant program, the state stopped stocking this area. My question is can I bow hunt deer on this property? When it was stocked with pheasant, a CO that I know had told me since they were stocking the property, he would hard pressed to pinch someone for deer hunting with a bow on this property. Now that it is no longer stocked I wonder what the thoughts of enforcement would be?

If you would like the specific area, PM me.

Thanks for your time.

If it's not a DEEP owned/leased area then I would say no. Generally the only state property where hunting is permitted is on DEEP property. DOT, DOC, DMH and other state agencies with large tracts of property do not permit hunting.

EnCon, just one more thing which may or may not be relavent. There are no signs on this piece of property stating it is No Trespassing, No Hunting or Fishing etc. The property is definate state of CT.

Doesn't matter. We do things different in CT than other states like Vermont. Up there if the property is not posted you can hunt it. Down here you need permission of the property owner to hunt, it's not a requirement that the property be posted (or not), you need permission. If it's DOT property technically you would need permission from the Commissioner of DOT to hunt on it.

There is a piece of DOT property that I tried to get permission just to cross through to access another parcel I could hunt. I spent the time tracking down the appropriate people and was told absolutely not -

No I understand what you are saying. The strange part was/is the DEEP was stocking pheasant on it, so therefore it was open at one time. There are no posted signs on it now or before.

It may have been open at one time, but if Wildlife is not stocking it anymore and it's not listed as an open/public hunting area then it's automatically closed...unless DOT gives you permission to hunt there.
