EnCon what do we as sportsman need to do to get some bunker regulations past? In the western sound I watch our harbors get depleted of bunker in just a few weeks. This ruins the fishing for the rest of the year. Obviously if there's no forage for the predators to eat, they will move on. I watch as bunker boat after bunker boat comes into CT waters from NY and take thousands of bunker every day. I have witnessed the local PD's as well as the DEP officers try to stop this practice, but when they confront the NY cast-netters they simply say the bunker are for their own use and not being sold. This is both ridiculous and furstrating. This could be curtailed if say a person was allowed 25 bunker per day per person. I mean with four guys on the boat that would equal 100 bunker per day. I don't know anyone who would need more than that in a day. With the amount of money we spend on such a short season, I'm ready to pack it up and sell the boat. Bunker are a staple for all predators, especially striped bass. This is why we are seeing so many more long and thin females. Many biologists feel that these thinner bass are more susceptible to Mycobacteria, which threatens to wipe Striped Bass from our waters. The economic impact of something like this would be devastating for anyone involved in the fishing/boating community. Lets figure out a way to take a stand before its too late.

I have fished or hunted almost everyday of my life; the rest have been wasted.

Your best bet is to let your local state representative or state senator know. This would require a statutory or regulatory change, which they need to approve. Your other option is to contact Dave Simpson, the Director of our Marine Fisheries Division in Old Lyme. 860-447-4306. Let him know your concerns and see what his thoughts are. Just a suggestion, the more people that you have on board with your point of view, the more voices you can present in a united front. This will give some additional weight to your recommendation.

Are the rumors true? Will there be a bunker/menhaden posession limit implemented next year?

It's only a rumor now. Don't bet on it. Every tackle shop on the shoreline will be fighting any new regulation. Just think of how much money (cash untaxed) would be lost if guys had all the bunker they wanted without having to buy it at the local shop.

I called Dave Simpson and found him to be very professional and extremely knowledgeable. We discussed bunker regs proposal and what is currently liked by most people
