was wondering if its legal to take a dead hawk for the skeleton? my buddy found one stuffed in a tree last year and then it was moved into the woods. was wondering if i went back would it be legal for me to take it for the skeleton? who even knows if its still there, but thought it would be neat to add to my collection of animal finds and it wouldnt be wasted.

thats a no no from what i heard.. im looking into being an apprentice falconer i belive u need a falconers permit in order to even have raptor feathers and even then there are certain exceptions like bald eagles.. there was a dead red tail hawk up at bantam one day when i was ice fishing i was really tempted on pickin it up but just not worth risking it

Hawks are Federally protected species. While it would not be a state violation to possess the skeleton I'm fairly certain that it would be a Federal violation. To play it safe I would suggest contacting the US Fish & Wildlife Service to get their take on it. I know we have made arrests (for the Federal violation) when we caught people with hawk talons and in one case a guy had a hawk's entire foot.

yeah, good to know. I found a redtail hawk frozen in perfect condition laying on top of some bushes. I was deer hunting at the time with a shotgun. My first thought, this would be cool to bring home. My second thought "Prima facie", Shotgun + Hawk. I took a pic and left it there.

thanks for the info!!!!!!! my buddy had shown me the bird, and we check it out. and left it there. it was really cool to see the bird up close especially the talons, but i will let nature reclaim it. just wish it wasnt wasted, like if a nature society could take it and make a complete skeleton structure out of it. thats what i would have done.
