Well today while at work, it appears that a lady discovered that ducklings had fallen down a sewer grate while following it's mother. She saw them fallin one by one. She contacted the DEEP and officer Michael Curran came to help out.
I came out to lend a hand. We finally were able to unwedge the heavy grate and encon officer Curran saved the day by going down the sewer and tracking down, 12 ducklings.
We put them in a bag he had in his vehicle. Mama duck was having a stroke during the entire time. My wife showed up with a crowbar and took a couple of picks of the animal rescue. Maybe i will post them tommorrow.
I thanked the officer and headed back to work. Only to find out later that they heard another duckling peeping down the sewer! HE WENT BACK DOWN, and has to go 25 ft down a narrow opening.
Sir you went above and beyond the call of duty. Great job today, everyone was all smiles when the mama was reunited with the chicks.

This sort of thing happens all the time. Over the last 7 years i have pulled several ducklings out of catch basins. The hen will always stick around flipping out while you retrive them. Once out they will run right back to her. We had to put portable gates on the catwalks on our secondary clairifiers to prevent the ducks from getting in. The Hen is able to fly out of the tank but the little ones can not. It takes a long time scooping them out with nets. As a side note be very careful entering catch basins as they may contain H2S gas which will kill you.
