Marine District Monthly Highlights - May 2015

Turkey Arrest

On May 1,2015 Officer Stone responded to a complaint of illegal turkey hunting in New Haven. The New Haven Police department discovered an individual hunting on city property. Officer Stone determined that the suspect was in fact hunting turkeys on city property and did not have a valid permit. The suspect stated he was .not aware he needed permission to hunt on city property and purchased his turkey permits the day after his arrest. The accused was arrested for hunting turkey without a permit, and hunting on property without landowner consent. His archery equipment was seized as evidence and he is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior court to answer to the above chargers.



Fishing Arrest

On May 18, 2015 officer Ulkus was patrolling the Thames River / New London Harbor area. He observed the charter fishing vessel "Osprey" heading up river toward its dock. When the vessel arrived at its dock, the officer conducted an inspection. During the inspection, the officer found that the captain of the fishing vessel did not have the required party charter license. The captain never got one for 2015 or 2014 calendar year. Also on board the vessel were several summer flounder (fluke) fillets but no carcasses. This is also a violation of marine fishing regulations. The captain of the vessel was charged with charter fishing without a license and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior court on June 3rd.



Security Detail

On May 20, 2015 Officers frorn the Marine District assisted US Secret Service with site security at and around the Groton New London Airport for the presidential visit to the US Coast Guard Academy. Officers utilized vessels, all terrain vehicles and patrol trucks to provide security at Bluff Point and the surrounding waterways near the airport. Officers were called upon to use their local knowledge and skills to assist with the lengthy security operation.Boating Arrest

On May 26, 2015 Officer Mihalyak and Stanko were patrolling the Connecticut River by vessel. While doing so the officers saw two people operating separate personal.watercrafts (PWC's) at a high rate of speed south into a steerage only speed zone. When the officers attempted to initiate a stop one of them decided to ignore the officers commands, flipped them the middle finger and speed away in order to elude them. Officers were able to determine who the individual was and apprehended him in Wethersfield cove. After speaking to the operator he admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages earlier in the day at a local bar. The male suspect was arrested and processed at the Wethersfield Police Department for violation of boating regulations and refusal to stop vessel (class A misdemeanor). He is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior court.


East District Monthly Highlights - May 2015

Hunting

On Wednesday May 15th 2015 Officer Scatena received a call about a vehicle that had been parked on a dirt road in Natchaug State Forest for three days. Upon arrival she entered the woods and with the assistance of area park maintainers found a tent blind. After a short investigation she learned that the occupant of the tent blind was illegally turkey hunting using an unplugged shotgun, illegal loads ('00' buck shot), and had been illegally camping the forest for the past three days. The accused was arrested and released on a summons to appear in court at a later date.


Fishing

On Saturday May 3rd 2015 Officer Ruggiero was patrolling the CT River for fishing enforcement and saw two men fishing from shore in the area of Middletown. After a short surveillance he noticed that one of the men caught a striped bass that appeared to be less than the legal length of 28". He approached the subject for a compliance check and determined that in fact the bass was less than the legal length. Officer Ruggiero issued the man an infraction and was able to release the fish back into the river.

Boating

On Sunday May 3rd 2015 officers from the East District responded to Coventry Lake for a boating accident involving 10 people. The case remains under investigation by EnCon Police.
On Monday May 4th 2015 officers from the East District responded to the Shetucket River for a reported boating accident involving a missing juvenile . The case remains under investigation by EnCon Police.

Park & Forest

On Thursday May 21st 2015 Officer Ruggiero was patrolling Haddam Meadows State Park when he came upon a small party of young men smoking marijuana and drinking alcoholic beverages. Upon investigation one of the juveniles was placed under arrest. The mother of the accused picked up the youth after medical treatment was refused. The juvenile was issued a summons for illegal possession of marijuana and is scheduled to appear in juvenile court .

East District EnCon Police continues to respond to numerous after hours underage drinking parties throughout the District at our State Parks and Forests.
