Larceny
On August 23, 2013 Officer Scatena was patrolling Diana’s Pool in Chaplin due to numerous larcenies from motor vehicles and other criminal activity. While on patrol she heard glass breaking and an activated car alarm. She immediately responded to the area and found a white male suspect standing near a vehicle which had a broken window. The suspect, who had a fresh bleeding wound on his arm and hand, initially denied any involvement to the incident but later admitted to riding his bike to the park to steal wallets and purses. The suspect also had an active warrant for his arrest and a pending felony court case. Officer Scatena took the suspect into custody where he was then charged with criminal mischief, 3rd degree and larceny 6th degree.
Threatening
During the afternoon of August 27, many DEEP employees began receiving E-mails of a threatening nature, including one threatening to poison the waters at Chatfield Hollow State Park. The E-mails were allegedly sent by a Wayde A. Isakson, Madison. DEEP EnCon Police, along with Connecticut State Police, immediately began an investigation which resulted in Mr. Isakson's arrest at Chatfield Hollow State Park. He was then transported to Troop F for processing.
DEEP EnCon Police charged Mr. Isakson (dob - 12/12/57), with Threatening, First Degree; Breach of Peace, First Degree; and Making Terrorist Threats, based on the threatening E-mails received by the DEEP employees allegedly sent by Mr. Isakson. Mr. Isakson is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on September 10, 2013.
DEEP’s Emergency Response Unit responded to the scene and began testing the waters there. The results of those tests revealed no evidence of any hazardous materials in the water. The incident remains under investigation by DEEP EnCon Police.
Marine Fishing Violations
During the month of August, officers investigated and responded to over 80 marine fishing incidents. Many of these incidents included the illegal harvesting of blue crabs, the taking of short scup and blackfish under the legal size limit, over harvesting of “snapper” bluefish and fishing without a marine license.
West District
Marijuana Grows On State Property
On August 12th, EnCon Police Officer Erin Crossman and EnCon Police K9 “Ellie“ located two marijuana grows in Kent. One was in the Housatonic State Forest and the second in the Housatonic Wildlife Management Area. Members of the State Police Narcotics Task Force also responded to both locations where a number of marijuana plants were seized.
Naked Swimmer on Candlewood Lake
On August 17th, EnCon Police Sergeant Chris Dwyer and Officer John Chickos were conducting a boating enforcement patrol on Candlewood Lake when they received a report of what appeared to be an intoxicated naked male on City Island in Danbury. Reports indicated that the male attempted to swim off the island multiple times and appeared to be in distress. Sgt Dwyer and Officer Chickos located the individual, who was naked, and determined that he dove into the water and while swimming lost his baggy shorts. The EnCon officers brought the individual back to shore where they were met by Danbury Police officers who assisted the individual in getting home.
Lost Hikers in Granby
On August 29th, the Granby Police requested the assistance of the EnCon Police in searching for three female hikers in their 60’s who had become lost in a heavily wooded area of Granby adjacent to Enders State Forest. EnCon Police Sergeant Chris Dwyer and Officers Ed Yescott, Tim Hill, Keith Williams responded. In addition, EnCon Police K9 officers Holly Bernier with EnCon K9 “Saydee” and Bill Logiodice with EnCon K9 “Ruger” responded. After a search conducted by Granby Police and Fire and EnCon Police, the three hikers were located in a heavily wooded area by EnCon Police Officer Tim Hill. Officer Hill escorted the three hikers, who were not injured, out of the forest. BUI arrests on Candlewood Lake
On Friday, August 23rd, EnCon Police officers Keith Williams and Nick Miofsky observed a vessel operating in an erratic manner on Candlewood Lake. Upon stopping the vessel in the area of Echo Bay, the officers suspected that the operator was intoxicated. After performing a series of field sobriety tests the officers arrested the woman for Illegal Operation of a vessel while under the influence of alcohol (BUI), Failure to Display Navigation Lights, and Interfering with an Officer.
On Saturday, August 31st ,EnCon Police Sergeant Sean Buckley and Officer William Logiodice were patrolling Candlewood Lake as part of the Operation Dry Water Boating Safety Enforcement initiative in a joint operation with Candlewood Lake Authority Marine Patrol. Operation Dry Water is a national initiative of BUI detection and enforcement aimed at reducing the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities and fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use on the water.
Sgt Buckley and Officer Logiodice observed a vessel operating erratically in the narrow channel between Pine Island and Candlewood Shores / Arrowhead Point. During the course of a Boating Safety Check and subsequent investigation it was discovered that the operator appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Sgt Buckley and Officer Logiodice took the operator into custody and transported him with the assistance of Brookfield Police to the Brookfield Police Department where he was processed and released on bond.
