This is just an opinion type question and I realize that you guys just enforce the regulations and do not make them, but have you ever heard any talk of instituting a mentor program in CT? They have it in other states and I think it does wonders for getting new hunters involved at a younger age. Even if CT would allow mentoring during the junior hunting days, that would be great.
In PA the mentor program, a licensed hunter 21 years or older can take a youth (younger than 12) hunting with them. The youth can actually be the shooter of the animal and the adult would tag the animal with his tag.
I'll be buying my PA license again next year and taking my 8 yo son with me hunting and if he decides he wants to shoot, so be it.
I would gladly give up all of my tags but 1 in CT, if it allowed me to take my son hunting and let him shoot before the age of 12. By 12 years old, so many kids are already into other things and don't want to be bothered much with hunting. Hunting/fishing is all my son talks about because I always take him with me, but it wouldn't suprise me if by the age of 12 he's moved on to other things.
Just putting it out there....I think this program is fantastic and I would personally love to see this implemented before sunday hunting, hunting after legal sunset etc. Once my kids are over 12, there will always be other youth that could be taken out.
