When I was a kid,a 7 weight as considered the "all round" rod. Good advice then and excellent advice today. I use a 6/7 rod for everything- the rod in medium action will catch everything that swims in our taxable state. I keep 2 7wt. rods rigged for every trip. one with a floater and one with a sinker. that way you can work all of the water columns. A 7 weight will throw 1/0 clousers down to size 20 dries and nymphs. excellent choice for a all purpose rod. Medium action allows smaller fish to play and has the backbone to stop sizable bass etc. have fun with the 7 weight.I will be chasing smallies. largies and crappie tomorrow with that 7 weight. When the river drops, that same 7 weight will see striper action. I keep a 9 weight on the boat when out in the salt. the 7 gets used more. good luck
