I use to walk down the streets in my neighborhood to get my squirrel hunting spots back when I was a kid, 1979, now I just dated myself, with rifle in hand and nobody would even bat an eyelash. Now if I did that, al hell would break lose! Just last season, I bumped into a warden friend of mine while deer hunting here in MA. He asked if I had crossed the public (dirt) road and I replied yes with my gun unloaded. That's when he said that to be legal, I should put the shotgun in a gun sock before crossing. Really... What's next?
