I noticed someone scooping up herring this spring. I was curious and I asked to look into their bucket. They had 6 - they were black on top with the trademark black dot, about 10" long. Are these alewives? The "scoopers" ended up live lining them, I did not hang around to see the results (my guess is with striper candy like that didn't last too long!)

I always thought there was SEVERE penalties for possessing these. Are the laws different for alewives vs. bluebacks? I also figured it is illegal to possess them alive or dead - is this correct?

Appreciate any insight.

$154 for the violation and at the officer's discretion is can be applied per fish in possession in the prohibited waters. You can keep landlocked alewives if you catch them and use them on the same waterbody live, or if you have them dead and frozen it's OK too. Snagging them in the CT River, Thames, Housatonic, etc. and using them as bait is a violation.

From the DEP anglers guide - PG 10

Quote:
Alewife & BLUE BACK HERRING
Emergency Fishery Closure is in effect:
Taking of anadromous alewife and blueback herring is prohibited from
all Connecticut waters including Long Island Sound.

Landlocked alewife
Landlocked alewife populations are established in several Connecticut
lakes and ponds (see page 18). Landlocked alewife may be taken by
angling or scoop net only from the following lakes:
Amos Lake Crystal Lake (Ellington) Rogers Lake
Ball Pond Highland Lake Squantz Pond
Beach Pond Quassapaug Lake Uncas Lake
Candlewood Lake Quonnipaug Lake Waramaug Lake

I thought this came up last year and it was ok to use frozen store bought herring if you had a receipt or they suggested keeping a receipt. Do a search of the forum and see what you come up with.

Capt,

Thanks, I appreciate the reply with the penalty.

I assume this happens quite a bit, I definitely was not in a landlocked lake or pond. Honestly, it pissed me off, I had my son with me and I explained to him that I knew it was illegal. Ofcourse he followed with - "well why are they doing it?". One of those parental learning/teaching moments.

BTW - appreciate all that is you and your colleagues due, I know it is a tough job.
