We have black bears all over the state. Report for the past year at this link:

http://www.depdata.ct.gov/wildlife/sighting/bearsight.asp

Bears move over a wide area. We have had bear sightings in Killingworth, Middletown and Middlefield, so Haddam is not too much of a walk (or swim) for them.

There was a mother and cub spotted about a few months ago in the Wethersfield meadows. Some guy was picking fiddle heads and he saw a cub so he he started running back to his truck, then the moma came out.

This pic is from a former co-worker's aunt's house in Pawcatuck, spitting distance to Elmridge and rt. 95. I believe he told me it was taken by the animal control officer c. 2008. Not big, but hell, it's a bear....

I really wish the state would implement a bear hunting season. Make it a lottery and hand out some tags - 1, 10, 100 whatever.
