How far from a road to shoot

When hunting with firearms, how far off of the road do you need to be? I know it's 500 feet from a dwelling, but I'm not sure how far from a road you need to be. Thank you.
"Hunting Near Roads, Buildings, People, and Domestic Animals - Hunting or shooting from or across the traveled portion of any public roadway is prohibited. Shooting toward any person, building, or domestic animal when within range is prohibited.
As I learned and understand the reg: stay OFF a road (and BTW, breakdown/parking lanes/areas/pullouts="traveled portion") or UNLOAD your firearm, and don't shoot ACROSS a road. A public road is accessible by John Q. Public in his/her car (truck, motor vehicle...), if it's gated and locked, maybe not a "road", i.e.: not accessible; if the gate is unlocked, it's a road. YMMV and invariably will...
PLEASE, someone (Encon) correct me if I'm wrong. FWIW, if I think I can drive on it, my firearm is empty (unloaded). I've missed a few "opportunities" this way.

You cannot shoot from the road or across the road. There is no restriction on how close to a road you may be as long as you are shooting away from the road. But, like everything else, please use a little common sense. Sitting in a treestand on the edge of a public road where everyone can see you while legal, is not a good idea.
All roads in state forests are public roads. A logging trail on private property is not a public road.

You need to take a look at the map for the particular forest. If it's just a logging trail cut into a hillside by a skidder then it's not a road. However, if the road is shown on the map of the forest and it's maintained by the state, then it's considered a public roadway.
26-66-1 (e) No hunting weapon shall be discharged toward any person, building or domestic animal when the same is within range or from or across the traveled portion of any public roadway.
(i) Hunting is prohibited from the traveled portion of a public road or on any road adjacent to any premises used for the breeding, rearing, or holding in captivity of wildlife, or premises used for zoological purposes, or posted by the Department or its agents against said activity.
This was a great question. I always assumed there was a buffer for roads similar to that of houses for firearms. There are a few places I can think of where being setup close (150 feet or so) to a road would result in some great opportunities with a gun
