Are walleye stocked in Squantz pond every year ? How many are stocked and what size are they? There is heavy fishing pressure on Squantz and with the abundance of alewives stocking #s should be increased.
the answer is yes, eyes are stocked every year. fingerling(5") are stocked.3500/5000 are stocked, about 10% survive the first year and it takes 3 years to grow to legal(18") size. With 12/15 boats out there every week end night,You can guess the situation.Loading it up with Browns isn't going to help them survive and grow for sure
Personally, I don't believe predation is as bad as what we might think and the reverse is more likely with some of the larger walleyes having stockers in their stomachs. I know a number of walleyes are caught out of C-Wood every year and with the size of the lake any number of walleyes are probably swimming there with a record breaker amongst them.
I have yet to find a trout in a Squanz walleye, last year Deep figured 350 legal sized eyes in there.I've taken them with perch, walleye in them. a 5" fish is far game for all large preditors I'm sure. The last stocking were all 12/14 inch browns,I would think a year from now most will grow to eat anything
In the past, an avid walleye fisherman-Squanto-posted a report with photos of several large walleye he caught with stockies in their bellies. I personally have never had a predator hammer a small perch off my line, I believe their hard scales and spiny fins make them a little less desirable to the larger fish. With all the alewives available and they are the very snackable for the denizens of the semi-deep Squantz Pond, why bother with a much larger stockie?? When I fished for Walleye in Vermont on a regular basis, smaller baits were the rule. For what it's worth my two cents to the discussion.
I have had many talks with Mark(squantos)He feels the walleye population has drained to the point he won't even come down anymore. Tony Val took a gut hooked smallie home and found a small eye in it.I do not believe anything is hard aND FAST WITH PREDITORS. I also know there are channel cats in there over 10 lbs . add snapping turtles and it all adds up But face it MAN is the worst. Last year I didn't catch a single legal sized eye.First year in 15. This is just the sharing of infromation, That is why I said 'I'. I know some guys up there only fish shiners,It's all just fishin!
