East District

Search and Rescue

On May 19, 2013 an EnCon Police K9 team was dispatched to Day Pond State Park in Colchester for a missing 8 year old boy. The boy had separated from a family member while walking the trails and was missing for over an hour. State Police troopers and local fire department personnel also responded to assist in the search. The EnCon Police K9 team found the lost boy off of the main trail approximately one mile into the woods. The young boy was unharmed and reunited with his family members on scene.

Security Detail

On May 22, 2013 ENCON Police Officers assisted the US Secret Service and US Coast Guard providing dignitary security for the Coast Guard Academy Commencement ceremony in New London. Officers were positioned both on water and land for the Vice Presidential visit. Officers were positioned in and around the area as part of the security team.

Motor Vehicle

On May 9, 2013 an EnCon Police officer was patrolling Mansfield Hollow State Park and Boat Ramp area when the officer found a subject committing a violation in the boat ramp area. Upon stopping accused the officer learned that the operator was under suspension and had no insurance for the vehicle. The EnCon Officer placed the subject under arrest and issued her a summons to appear in court.

On May 18, 2013 An EnCon Police officer was travelling W/B on Route 14 in Scotland when he witnessed another operator make a dangerous pass in a ‘no passing zone’. The accused was stopped and was issued an infraction for same and while dealing with the subject he learned there was a warrant for his arrest from Plainfield PD. The subject was taken into custody where he was then transported to Plainfield PD for processing.

Illegal Hunting - Beaver

On May 18, 2013 An EnCon Police officer responded to a private pond in the town of East Haddam for a complaint of two males trying to shoot beavers from a paddle boat. Some residents near the pond had observed two males in the boat trying to shoot a beaver with a bow and arrow near its lodge. The complainants also provide video to the officer upon his arrival. The EnCon Officer was able to locate the suspects near the area where one of them admitted to his illegal activity because he felt they were a nuisance. The suspect was charged with illegal hunting of beaver and a boating violation.

West District

Fishing enforcement

During the month of May EnCon Police officers in the Western District focused fisheries enforcement activity on the Housatonic River and the northern half of the Connecticut River. EnCon Police Officers handled 85 recreational fishing incidents which resulted in 26 arrests and 22 written warnings. Of the 85 incidents, 16 were on the Connecticut River in the Hartford/Wethersfield/Rocky Hill area and resulted in 12 arrests and 4 written warnings. On the Housatonic River, particularly in the Derby/Shelton area, EnCon Police Officers handled 28 incidents resulting in 8 arrests and 8 written warnings.
EnCon Police officers in the West Marine Sector handled 46 recreational fishing complaints in the Marine zone that resulted in 17 arrests and 9 written warnings.

Bears

During the month of May, bears became very active after leaving hibernation. EnCon Police Officers in the Western District received 28 complaints of nuisance bears. One incident involved a homeowner shooting a yearling cub with a pellet gun that the homeowner claimed was becoming aggressive with his dog. The cub was injured to the extent that EnCon officers were forced to euthanize it. A second incident occurred where a bear sow began chasing a dog. When the dog’s owner opened the door to the house to get the dog to safety, the bear continued to charge and nipped the leg of the homeowner. That bear was also euthanized as it was deemed to be a public safety threat after attacking a human.

Shellfish boat accident

On May 16th EnCon Police officers responded to a report of a boating accident on Long Island Sound in the Bridgeport area. Officers arrived and determined that three shellfishing boats were dragging for oysters in the same area when two of the boats owned by one shellfisherman collided with the third boat owned by another fisherman. EnCon Police determined who was at fault and issued one boat captain an infraction for failure to keep a lookout and the second captain was issued a verbal warning.

Search & Rescue on Mohawk Trail

On May 25th at 7:30pm, EnCon Police was notified by Litchfield County Dispatch that a call had been received from a hiker on the Mohawk Trail somewhere between Cornwall and Canaan that he was sick and needed assistance. LCD lost cell phone contact with the individual and were unable to obtain a better location. EnCon Police responded as well as the Cornwall Fire Department and troopers from Troop L. A foot search of the Mohawk Trail was initiated at various entrance areas to the trail. The search continued until midnight when it was called off until dawn. A second call was received from the subject at 2:15am. Officers and fire personnel returned to the area and the subject was located by EnCon Police at 5:30am.

Nice to see the arrest on RT 14. I drive it every day to work and people just drive like ***holes on that road. I dont drive like a granny by any means but some of them are just plain asinine.
Too bad about the bears having to get put down.
