Am wondering why the gates to some state forests are locked. Specifically, Shenipsit forest on 190 in somers. Was hoping to do some coyote hunting up there.

They lock them during the winter often due to the weather. I'm sure to keep folks from getting stuck or stranded among other things. Gonna have to hump it in which isn't bad, keeps lots of folks out of there.

It keeps the kids (some of them up to 55+ years old) with 4X4s who think they are bulletproof from getting stuck in state forests. We've also got small game hunting going on for another month in the forests so it keeps the Jeepers from accidently getting in the line of fire from a small game hunter shooting at a squirrel or rabbit. Some of the forests also have ongoing logging operations taking place and the locked gates keep people from playing with, damaging or stealing equipment.
