West District
ATV accident Mohawk State Forest
On May 18th at 3:08am, EnCon Police received a call from State Police Troop B reporting an ATV accident in Mohawk State Forest in Cornwall. EnCon Officers responded and a determined that 3 individuals were illegally riding ATVs in the state forest when one of them flipped after hitting a boulder. The operator broke several ribs and was flown by Life Star helicopter to St Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. All 3 were charged with operation of an unregistered ATV, violating hours of operation in a state forest and operating an ATV on state land without permission.
Herring enforcement
During the month of May, EnCon Police officers in the Northwest Sector received numerous complaints of individuals illegally snagging herring on the Farmington River at the confluence of the Connecticut River. Officers increased patrols in the area as much as possible in an effort to reduce the illegal activities. Officers ended the month with 10 arrests and 1 written warning for illegal taking of herring by shore anglers. In addition EnCon officers arrested two individuals for illegal possession of herring on a boat in the Connecticut River. The individuals had been live lining herring from the boat and had a live well with 12 more herring in possession. Officers had been advised by shore anglers that the individuals in the boat had been selling herring.
Lake Patrol Officer Academy
EnCon Police Sergeant Sean Buckley, who is responsible for supervising Candlewood Lake and the Candlewood Lake Authority Marine Patrol, completed instructing the biannual Lake Patrol Officer Training Academy. New Lake Patrol officers for both Candlewood Lake and Lake Housatonic Authorities are required to complete the training program prior to receiving appointments as Lake Patrol Officers.
Marine District
Park assault
On May 12, 2014 officers from the Marine District responded to Hammonassett Beach State Park for a complaint of a person flying a remote control helicopter with a camera on it. A female sunbather requested police because she believed the young male operator of the helicopter was inappropriately taking pictures of people, including her. The female then confronted the 17 year old male in the parking lot. During this confrontation the female began to assault the youth. The assault was captured on the victim’s mobile phone. The assault was finally stopped by a witness who separated the two parties. When officers arrived they found the victim with a torn shirt and scratches on his neck and face. The twenty three year old female was charged with assault and breach of peace.
DUI arrest
On May 25, 2014 officers from the Marine District were working at Hammonassett Beach State Park due to a large gathering at one of the Pavilion facilities. Officers were familiar with the troublesome group from years past. At approximately 1800 hours officers observed a vehicle exceeding the speed limit and driving erratically away from the partying group. Officers conducted a traffic stop and conducted field sobriety tests on the operator of the vehicle. The operator was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and will be required to appear in New Haven Superior court in June.
East District
Park and Forest
On May 2nd, 2014 Officer Vroman received a complaint regarding firewood that had been stolen from the person permitted to cut firewood on the Airline Trail State Park property. The reporting party later saw the firewood at a nearby residence and Officer Vroman was able to get a confession from the owner of the residence regarding the stolen wood. An infraction was issued and the wood was returned to the rightful owner.
On May 14th, 2014 at approximately 1500 hours a complaint was received via D.E.E.P. Dispatch of a lost female hiker in the area of Shenipsit State Forest in Ellington, CT. Officers Scatena, Danielson, and Vroman, Sgt. Wolfe and Capt. Tomassone responded to the incident. Upon receiving the coordinates for the lost woman Officer Scatena made cell phone contact with the lost hiker and was able to determine her location. Officer Scatena was able to quickly get to the lost hiker and facilitate her exit from the woods. Officer Scatena’s knowledge of her patrol area was very helpful in reducing the length of the search, minimizing equipment being utilized, and ensured nobody was injured. Through the efforts of all involved, the lost hiker was found and returned to her vehicle in short order.
On May 17th, 2014 Officer Vroman received a complaint that there was underage drinking taking place at Wolf Den State Campground. Upon investigating the complaint he found a large group of High School students, some of which had been drinking alcoholic beverages, and one of which had been transported to Day Kimball Hospital due to her level of intoxication. Several of the students were issued infractions and all were evicted from the campground.
On May 21st, 2014 D.E.E.P. dispatch received a complaint through Connecticut State Police Troop K of a suicidal female who was believed to be in the area of Eastern District Headquarters in Marlborough. Capt. Tomassone searched the immediate area with negative results and with the assistance of Fisheries Biologist Chris McDowell they searched the adjacent wooded area. Officers Lindo and Logiodice with Sgt. Wolfe searched the nearby roads. Dispatch requested a better location from Southbridge MA PD, the original complainant, and it was determined that the location of the despondent woman was closer to Mansfield Hollow Dam in Windham. Upon arrival to that area Officer Lindo overheard through the troop radio that the vehicle was located in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Officer Lindo responded to that location to assist the Trooper on scene. Officer Lindo and the Trooper had to physically subdue the woman as she was attempting to take more pills. His actions helped to save her life. The woman was then committed to a local hospital for observation.
On May 28th, 2014 Officer Scatena was dispatched to a complaint of people walking the Airline Trail State Park in Hampton, CT wearing large knives on their belts. Upon arrival she determined that both subjects were in violation due to the size of the knives they each had which consisted of 7” blade survival type knives. One of the subjects was also in possession of marijuana and had been littering beer cans, and the other subject had an active warrant for his arrest from another agency. Both subjects were issued appropriate charges and the wanted subject was taken into custody, transported to CSP Troop D and processed accordingly.
Officers in the Southeast Sector have been very busy with numerous infractions issued for off-road vehicles and ATV enforcement in Meshomasic State Forest and Cockaponsett State Forest.
Fishing
On May 23rd 2014 Officer Vroman received a complaint of possible over-bagging trout at Valley Falls Pond in Vernon. This area has a two trout limit. Upon arrival he found the suspect with five trout in a bucket. The suspect claimed he was fishing with a friend and only three trout belonged to him. Officer Vroman issued him an infraction for his violation. The suspect was concerned that he would have his fishing privileges suspended as he had in years past. Upon checking the licensing system it was determined that the subject had lost his license for the same offense in 2012.

As well as a low math average for him....2 is the limit??? but 2 of those trout don't belong to me lmao. Suspend his license so he can get more time to go back to school....jeeesh.
Side note I recall watching the news and seeing that drone/beach assault. Lady got what she deserved IMO.

It will be interesting to see what comes out of the drone incident and what if any restrictions are put on them. Is the DEEP concerned about them? Could I use a drone to fly over my hunting area and see where all the deer are?
