The 2015 CT Hunters guide defines under FIREARMS HUNTING:
"The holder of a firearms hunting license may use rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns, and high-velocity air guns subject to certain restrictions" and further defines "High-Velocity Air Guns: Restricted to those that use a single ball or pellet-like projectile. Additional restrictions on the use of air guns are the same as those for rifles and handguns."

The question is are there any lower velocity hand pump BB/pellet guns that are not covered by these restrictions? If so, would their use do require obtaining a hunting license?

IMHO if you're hunting with any airgun, you are hunting and require a license and need to obey the hunting regulations. I have killed tons of squirrels with my Crossman 2100 10 pump .177 smile1

The law applies to all airguns. If you are hunting with any airgun, you need a hunting license and must follow the hunting regulations.

Thanks for the info. The reason for asking was I am closer than 500 feet to my neighbors' houses and I have a problem with the invasive species English Sparrows threatening my bluebirds trying to nest in my nesting boxes. I was hoping there was a better solution to hit a sitting sparrow at a typical range of 25 feet besides a handheld slingshot. My accuracy with the slingshot is terrible, I was hoping for some low velocity short range implement that would be accurate enough at short ranges to do the job.

Back on topic of legal BB or bearing propelling device that would be legal where air guns are not. The goal is to have a device that will accurately shoot a BB or bearing 25 feet to neutralize the English Sparrows threatening my currently nesting bluebirds. There are two sparrow males hassling the bluebirds. Taking a mortally wounded bluebird out of a birdhouse with a hole pecked through an eye into its brain by a sparrow was not a pleasant experience. I use what traps and control measures I can, but would like to be able to knock the sparrow off a house or branch. I have a slingshot but my aim is terrible, never hit a thing.

Two questions: are there any CT limitations on slingshots, and does anyone know of a high tech slingshot with rifle stock, locking trigger that would be legal for this purpose here where due to nearness of other structures the air gun is not.

Trap em. There are many options available. google sparrow trap. A glue board at the entrance to the nest box works great and you can have the pleasure of killing it after its caught.

so no pellet guns within 500 feet of buildings or people?? my buddy was saying it wasn't illegal. i'm sure if someone calls, you're bagged. if you have a pistol permit and you get caught using the pellet gun is that a class D felony also?? any excuse to take a permit I would think.
