First skim ice on my small ponds a few days ago and this morning the main pond was skimmed over half of it. Skim ice on the Thanksgiving weekend means safe ice by Xmas -- old Farmer's Almanac forecast. Get your gear ready, don't be a season behind. Early ice is always the best ice.

I've still got my Vexilar, And I bought a 10 gallon aerated bait bucket from a fellow on FB, And I organized and tuned my tip-ups last year (after I was finally able to get out) And I bought a quad to get me out on the ice... So yeah, I have faith!!!
I've been known to shut down the entire Atlantic Seaboard just thinking about headed out for a day.

Ball Pond has ice fishermen fishing out from the boat launch to the first drop off by the log cabins. The north end has had no action since it froze later. There is one dock on the northwest corner with a pump in the water which has kept it open so that area is not safe. Squantz Pond has ice fishing from the boat launch out through that cove to in front of the beach. Beyond that there is no signs in the snow of anyone trying any other part of the pond. If you want to venture to the north then spud your way out there. Candlewood may be safe in the cove areas but I only saw the New Fairfield Beach area. The parking lot has been plowed and the gate down to the NF boat launch and boat docks is open. I saw one person across the cove at Chatterton's marina out on the ice maybe fishing or repairing one of the floating docks stuck in the ice. The state launch at Squantz on Candlewood is never safe to the left towards the causeway due to the pipe connecting Candlewood with Squantz and its flow of water from Squantz to Candlewood creating currents that bring warmer bottom water to the surface keeping it open. Plus it looks like the utility has been lowering Candlewood which increases this flow. That can make all of the edges in both Squantz and Candlewood unsafe.

Some some guys out early on Messerscmitts. Cedar is starting to turn grey colored with standing water near the beach. Be careful if venturing out this weekend!
I'll try to hit my sportsman's club pond tomorrow to jig up some monster trout. .I'll bring some guns to shoot if the ice is crap...either way..I'm having some fun !
Ice was crap.. shot 12 rounds at a 100 yards thru my New Haven made Winchester 30-06...all my shoulder could take lol..it's dialed in..wish I could hunt Ct state land with it..
I was fishing our club pond in Ivoryton / Deep River yesterday. There was about 6" crap ice on about 5-6 black ice underneath. Saturday people were on Cedar Lake about the same ice conditions.

I had the same problems with my 7mag until I got it ported by a gun shop here in Ct. My solution for the shotgun-only rules in Ct. state land and in some parts of NY was to buy a Savage 20g bolt action slug gun (model 220). Excellent accuracy and grouping out to 100 yards and very little recoil. Both solutions are relatively inexpensive.
