With the 10 day forecast, it looks like I'm not getting on Quassy with the blades this December..

This picture was taken 3 years ago today..

Jan 30th, and I'm in my boat, on Quassy, fishing open water.

There wasn't any snow on the ground.

Every year is different...

Ball Pond has ice fishermen fishing out from the boat launch to the first drop off by the log cabins. The north end has had no action since it froze later. There is one dock on the northwest corner with a pump in the water which has kept it open so that area is not safe.
Squantz Pond has ice fishing from the boat launch out through that cove to in front of the beach. Beyond that there is no signs in the snow of anyone trying any other part of the pond. If you want to venture to the north then spud your way out there.
Candlewood may be safe in the cove areas but I only saw the New Fairfield Beach area. The parking lot has been plowed and the gate down to the NF boat launch and boat docks is open. I saw one person across the cove at Chatterton's marina out on the ice maybe fishing or repairing one of the floating docks stuck in the ice. The state launch at Squantz on Candlewood is never safe to the left towards the causeway due to the pipe connecting Candlewood with Squantz and its flow of water from Squantz to Candlewood creating currents that bring warmer bottom water to the surface keeping it open. Plus it looks like the utility has been lowering Candlewood which increases this flow. That can make all of the edges in both Squantz and Candlewood unsafe.
