Thanks Mitch for that thread. was a cool read and pretty much yet again shows why this fish could work in this state. Id expect Obass to say no to this idea because even when he catches a pike he gets mad thats its not a small largemouth haha

im sorry to piss in the cornflakes joe, that wasnt cool.

i dont hate the idea. if you can get some support for a stocking of tiger musky, id be all about it. its not going to adversly effect any lake, and it will create a cool little fishery in what lakes its placed into.

i have my reasons to doubt it, which we can discuss while fishing. sorry to be such a stick in the mud. i was actually looking into if it would work.

Glad to hear they restocked it with muskies,I had heard some rumors they where thinking of stocking pike and walleye in there as well, not sure if they ever did or not.

haha i was just busting your chops. i know that this idea is just that.. an idea. Most likely wont happen but id like to push for it and maybe get the support from fisherman here in CT, maybe a petition with enough support the state would consider this as a viable option.

I guess I'll comment on this thread, ive been watching it for a little while now

as some of you guys know, I live not more than 2 minutes from woodridge. Im blessed to know ALOT of residents on the lake, most non fisherman, although I have a few friends that are. I myself used to live on the lake when I was a kid, and wish I still did.

Like stripertime stated (I feel like we may know each other..) the lake still has massive muskie, and was just stocked this spring with more. Its had walleyes since before the assosiation started stocking them (drop downs from tyler) and the fishery is quite sustainable for them.

I get the chance to fish the lake fairly often, however when I do, I never target the muskie. Why? Because the guys that live on the lake pay litterally out of their own pockets to put those fish in there(the assosiation didn't help with this stocking to my knowledge).

I'm a guest, and even though I can target them when I go, I choose not to, and leave them for the paying members. There are plenty of bass, perch, crappie, and of course, walleye to target.

One last thing: its private. very private. and trust me, you dont wanna get caught fishing there without a member. but if you know someone who belongs to the association, go fishing with them, its a beautiful lake.

back on topic now with the muskie in CT

the housy river lakes would be the best option IMO for a healthy, breeeding population. they're deep, have a little current, and plenty of forage. But thats just my uneducated opinion smile1

I think that less than 20% of the lakes and ponds in Connecticut have the ability to hold over stocked trout on a consistent year to year basis. Yes I understand there are places that may holdover some fish under ideal conditions, but ideal conditions typcially do not occur on back to back years....

In my opinion, the widespread stocking of trout in ponds and lakes that cannot consisntely hold over fish year to year (put and take fisheries) is a waste of money. I would love to see some of that money get invested in expanding the state's walleye and pike stocking programs. Stocking fish that can survive for multiple years in the states waters offers species diversity and flat out makes sense economically.

There are plenty of muskie rivers and lakes near Ct. One of the NYC reservoirs had tiger muskies, Muscoot if I recall correctly was one of them.
Then there is the Delaware River. The NJ state record muskie came out the huge hole below the Delaware Water Gap bridge on Rt. 80.
Greenwood Lake on the NJ/NY border is good enough for muskie that there are actually guide services for the fishery. Other NJ lakes are stocked with muskie and the Hacketstown warm water hatchery raises muskie.
Both Pa. and NY have plenty of muskie lakes and rivers. The St. Lawrence River is world renowned for muskies as is the upper Niagara River from the Peace Bridge to around Grand Island. Pa. has huge muskies in the Kinzua Reservoir in northwestern Pa., the Allegany River system downstream to Pittsburgh, the Susquehanna River (both branches), and other major impoundments and rivers.
Anyway, that is a few spots off the top of my head from years of fishing all three of those states.
Waters in Ct. that would support muskie are Candlewood, Lilli, Zoar, Lake Housatonic, the Ct. River and most of the larger drinking water reservoirs.
Muskie aren't stocked here because it is another expense and the focus is on the pike program. The best bet for a DEEP muskie program is for an exchange deal like Ct. swapping kokanee fry for some muskie fry with another state. Ct. has an exclusive with kokanee here in the Northeast and New England and could leverage deals with other states for walleye, muskie and channel catfish. But this requires thinking outside the box and government agencies don't do that well.
