Trying to clarify/figure out what I need for my nephew from VA to get a CT archery license. I've been told (by a DEEP phone operator) that his VA archery license is not sufficient for him to get a CT archery license because the VA hunting safety course combines archery and firearms. The new CT laws say he has to show proof of a dedicated archery safety course? This seems to indicate that if he wants to hunt archery in CT he must come up just to take the CT archery safety course. None of this seems to make much sense so I was hoping you could shed some light on what I'm missing. Thanks in advance for the help, WW2

DEEP was correct. You must show proof of a Bowhunting specific safety course - think this requirement went into effect in 2001. Now I have no clue if VA has such a course or not. Even in our firearms course we cover archery in a very minimal way - more to familiarize it to students, but mandate the bowhunting specific course. it's a one day course and no online learning option right now. he can take ANY bowhunting specific course that he can get into, doesn't have to be CT's course.
Contact Franklin Wildlife 860-642-7239 direct and ask them, They manage our CEFS course and might now what VA offers and if it is valid.
Thanks for the info. The VA course is a combined firearms and archery so will not be accepted in CT. VA does not even offer a bow hunting specific course so it would appear his only option is to come up and here and take the CT course. Since they are all booked up that is not an option. Personally I think since he can hold a VA archery license he should be able to get the CT. Do you happen to know if there are any generic on-line courses he can take that would meet the requirement?

You need the bowhunting course. If VA includes everything in their course that the CT bowhunting course has then it might be OK. I would suggest calling Hunter Education at Sessions Woods and discussing it with them. They would need to review what the VA course covers.
Definitely check in with either Franklin WMA or Sessions and that can tell you if there is anything else you can do besides coming to CT for a course. Maybe they can validate the VA course or the online course in the above link as well. Good luck.
Thanks. I spoke to Seassions Woods then the person they directed me to in Hartford. The answer I got was that the VA course was not acceptable and and an on-line course "might be, well maybe". Way too much griefad and uncertainty. Thanks again.
