Jacklighting arrest
On November 3, 2013, Officer O’Brien was patrolling in the town of Guilford for illegal hunting activity. Officer O’Brien had been watching several fields which previously had deer in them. Late that night a vehicle traveling in the area stopped near the side of the road and shined a light out into the fields. Officer O’Brien conducted a traffic stop on the offending pickup truck and found its two occupants were in possession of a loaded crossbow, as well as halogen spotlight. The two occupants, brothers, from North Branford, admitted to shining the field with the intent of killing a deer. The crossbow, bolt and spotlight were seized as evidence and the two suspects (one a juvenile) were charged with Jacklighting deer and criminal negligent hunting 3rd degree.

Hunting under the influence
On November 2, 2013 Officers from the Northeast sector were investigating an illegal hunting complaint in Nye Holman State Forest. The area being investigated had a hunting blind and a tree stand and was heavily baited with grain and corn. Officers later saw a man climb into the elevated tree stand with a loaded crossbow. When officers made contact with the man, they noticed he had been drinking beer and suspected that he was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage do engage in this behavior. Officers also discovered the suspect to be in possession of a handgun without having a valid pistol permit. The accused was taken into custody and charged with; illegal deer hunting over bait, hunting under the influence of intoxicating liquor, possession of a firearm while archery hunting, carrying a handgun without a permit, and carrying a firearm while under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Stolen ATV
On November 17, 2013 officers from the Northeast sector were investigating a trespassing complaint in the town of Windham near Jerusalem Road. At that location they discovered several people riding ATV’s illegally on private and State property. One of the operators was found to be riding a stolen Honda ATV. The ATV was stolen from Pennsylvania and had been purchased from an online web site. The accused later registered the ATV in Connecticut. The accused was charged with larceny fifth degree and simple trespass and released after posting bond. The Honda ATV was seized as evidence.


Waterfowl enforcement
On November 16, 2013 officer Ulkus was conducting a waterfowl enforcement initiative in the area of Old Lyme, Great Island marsh. Officer Ulkus was accompanied by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge Officer Willard. The area is a popular waterfowl area that can only be accessed by vessel. During an inspection of a group of hunters, officers found several violations. One individual was not carrying a hunting license or the required federal duck stamp. Another individual was in possession of an unplugged shotgun. Both individuals were later separately charged for the federal stamp violation and for the unplugged shotgun.

Assault on an Officer
On November 16th while on patrol, EnCon Police Officer Blackwell observed a suspect acting erratically on the side of Route 34 in Derby.  The Suspect was pacing back and forth in front of a transit bus stop enclosure.  When Officer Blackwell stopped her unmarked patrol vehicle to initiate contact with the Suspect because of his behavior, he continued kicking and tearing pieces of metal off the enclosure.  As Officer Blackwell was attempting to maintain control and take the Suspect into custody he became violently combative.  While controlling the Suspect's hands he attacked her and physically smashed her body into the metal enclosure, metal beam guardrail and asphalt. The area is a narrow strip between the roadway and a steep drop off into the Naugatuck River.  Officer Blackwell specifically asked several members of the public nearby on the busy roadway to call 911 for help but they ignored her and moved on.  Two brothers were working in their business across the street and observed the assault on the officer.  While one brother called 911 the other brother ran across four lanes of traffic to assist.  Despite their combined efforts they still were unable to get the suspect handcuffed and the struggle continued.  An off duty Wallingford Police Officer was travelling on Route 34 and observed the assault in progress.  The off duty officer stopped and assisted Officer Blackwell and the civilian in finally securing the handcuffs on the suspect and taking him into custody.  The Suspect was in possession of a hypodermic needle and had multiple 1 to 2 foot long pieces of twisted metal he had ripped from the enclosure on his person, in addition to several other stolen property items.  The Suspect is a convicted Felon and was scheduled to be remanded back into custody for violation of his probation for a minimum of 27 months. In addition to EnCon Police charges of assaulting an officer, the subject was charged by the Derby Police for larceny and criminal mischief.

Overturned Canoe

On November 21st Shelton Police notified EnCon Police of an overturned canoe in the vicinity on Lake Housatonic. EnCon officers responded and were assisted by the Echo Hose Company Fire Department in getting the three occupants of the canoe out of the lake. Initially one occupant made it to shore and two were unaccounted for. When the two other subjects were located they were hypothermic and were then transported to Griffin Hospital for treatment.


EnCon Police Arrest Subject for Numerous Deer Hunting Violations

On November 22nd, acting on a complaint received from the Hamden Police Department, EnCon Police arrested a subject for numerous deer hunting charges after he was found to be illegally hunting deer on private property in Hamden adjacent to Sleeping Giant State Park. EnCon Police Officers heard a gunshot in the woods and later located two dead buck deer. A DEEP Encon officer and her K9 were utilized to track the subject back to a resident address in Hamden.  The EnCon officer and her K9 companion also located a rifle hidden under leaves in the woods as well as other hunting equipment secreted nearby.  The subject, whose hunting privileges are currently under indefinite suspension, was charged with hunting deer without wearing orange; hunting while suspended; hunting without a license; hunting private land without written consent; hunting deer without a permit; exceeding the number of deer harvested per permit limit and two counts of failure to tag a deer upon harvest. 

EnCon Officer Takes Threatening Suspect into Custody
On November 25th, EnCon Police Officer Begley heard a broadcast on the State Police radio system reporting a subject at the Sharon Hospital Emergency Room threatening other patients and medical staff. It was unknown if the subject had any weapons. Officer Begley was in Sharon and closer to the hospital than any responding State Police units. Officer Begley responded to the hospital and took the subject into custody, holding him until State Police officers arrived.
