This will be enough to drive you crazy!!

Today I had free time around 3pm and headed down to Wethersfield Cove area, walked the path down to the river and there was only a few folks around. I tossed out a catfish bait and then started fishing for shad and tossing lures for bass. On my third cast I snagged a sabiki rig, sinker and all. By 5:30 the shoreline was crowded, must of been 20 people no more than a few feet apart.

Now I started hearing one of the guys yelling to others as he brings in three herring on a sabiki and hands them out to his friends. One guy tosses out a whole one while others are chunking them. At one point I counted 7 of them fishing with herring while the main culprit is still landing them. Total disregard, non caring and absolutely no concealment to what they were doing. There were not only guys fishing with these baits but kids, wife's, girlfriends and even grandma was handed a rod while sitting in her folding chair. I had to leave, but yet I see DEEP officers at trout management areas, boat launchs, etc. What's the point??

When I first got there, this was the first this thing I noticed.

I'll pass the info on to the officer who works that area.

I give the DEEP credit this year for being out checking. I have been checked at Barts, Bissel and SO.Windsor boat launches in the past week. What we need is the skeeters to hatch full force and clear the banks of poachers lol!

I think the key here is undercover, plain clothes operation. Maybe one officer fishing until he identifies several violators, and then they grab a bunch all at once. Seems like it's just way too easy for someone with a cell to tip off the swarm as soon as they see a uniform. I am very appreciative of our DEEP Officers, but understand they're spred thin. Sad thing is, even if they're caught, the court system will probably let them off easy.

Guilford clamming is cool like that. You're clamming away having a good ol time, but little do you know, the guy or gal next to you is a shellfish warden clamming themselves. If they see someone doing something outside the box, bam, they're pinched. I hear they got a group of Asians that way last summer that weren't playing by the rules.

Hopefully the Deep office can put a plan together to hit a few popular fishing locations in plain clothes after work one night and round up a few of these alewive/herring poachers!!!!!!

You're right Jay! You should of seen the stare-downs I was getting as I just stopped fishing and began watching, it's almost that they anticipated for me to make a move, after a few minutes I just shook my head and continued fishing and they went back to business as usual.

The problem is if a uniformed officer makes his/her way down to the river or even pulls into the parking lot the red flags will go off in a second. What aggravates me besides that they're breaking the law is that I'm tossing $20 lures and these folks are using the real-deal.
There's so many herring along that shoreline that every couple of minutes you'll witness a surface splash, that where the sabiki rigs get tossed. I'll admit while I was tossing a willow blade for shad I hooked up a few herring, at this point I decided it was futile for a shad, tossing them back also raised a few eyebrows and put a smile on my face. There's herring scales all along that shoreline.

Chris, that river is extremely low to a point you can see a few sandbars from shore, makes for good topwater action though, I just tossed a plug every-time I witnessed a surface brake and after what seemed a hundred casts I nailed two bass.

Time for the boat!!

Do you think these people just don’t know it’s illegal?? Are there an adequate amount of signs??

We have Angler Guide Books, we shouldn't need to bear the cost of installing additional signs!!!!!!!

I might have to dress up at a squatch and scare away the night crew at the cove.
