Mike - you are right and wrong at the same time.

Right that the real population slaughter is happening out in the ocean and near coastal environments.

But wrong that the numbers are flawed, the herring decline is as real as it gets. It is duplicated all up and down the eastern seaboard.

2013 will make the first year of mid water trawler regulation. Its been too long in coming,but at least its a start.

The river ban is to save the spawning population - that is why it is so critical.

the last time i called the tipline about rampant snagging in hartford, I was the one questioned, on and on and on, how did I know they were snagging, how do I know they didnt buy the herring, was I sure that the herring they were using were alive............

I just drive by them now.

As a kid 50 years ago we would catch in the local stream off the river 23 alewives (record) in a net and shoot them with bows and arrows and 22's They interrupted our trout fishing along with lampreys and suckers and eels Little did we know what it was all about

sounds like we grew up in the same area LOL

dad used to make me help catch garden fertilizer in the early 70's,spears,.22,bunker snags ,all that lol

when I lived in Maine we used to dip net them for work, and ship them to a fertilizer plant.

I miss my Uncle Lewie....However;
I know he's with me on every fishing trip.
