Ok since this is spreading all over CTF I am going to ask the question here. Why can't a DEEP officer go under cover to either the Wethersfield cove and/or Hartford launch. These people are not even discrete about the snagging. I just don't get it, they make up a law that is suppose to be critical to the herring population and they can not enforce it, why make the law? They are using sibiki rigs how hard is that to catch. It just makes me sick these low lives are getting away with it in plain site. Not only that but every striper goes into a bucket too.
There is really no need to call the tip line since you can pretty much guarantee if you go to Hartford you are going to see poachers. And now I guess Wethersfield Cove too.

The shore guys arent the only ones.. I drove by about 15 boats the other day just south of the cove.. ALL anchored up blatently chuckin small sabiki rigs and keeping small bass.. I saw a boat with 4 asain guys on it and a stringer of probably 10 short bass hangin off the back.. i said a few choice words, but they clearly fell on deaf ears... or non english ears

I'd still call the tip line if I were you. I came across a group using bunker snaggers to snag schoolies that were stacked up in a local river. I called the DEP hotline and an officer called me back in 2 minutes. 10 minutes later he was there to bust them. If you call they will come.
It is what it is. One of my very good friends works the marine division in Greenwich and constantly informs me of his frustration over situations as these. The DEEP is understaffed and they can only be so many places at once. I'm not trying to side solely with them, just stating what I know.
I too have witnessed many illegal activities that make my blood boil and always call the hotline. They're always there too help but if understaffed, who's going to respond to the call? It's a harsh reality that all the law abiding fisherman have to deal with. I'm not happy with it and I'm sure many who are reading my statements arent either. There's only so much that can be done.
I've gotten so angry in the past over things like this and have confronted people about it. Trust me, nothing good ever came from it.
I'm really tired of all the agencies that always respond: We're understaffed We're underfunded Not my job,. etc. etc. and then blame it on the last boss, or when that fails blame it on the new boss, It's not just the DEEP, but if you can't go home each night either happy with what you accomplished , or frustrated over what you could not, then it's time you started looking elsewhere. If you're not happy, and your customer is not happy, then it's time to change amd to move on. When you see people griping over the same situations year after year, and the only thing that changes is your seniority, it's time to either instigate meaningful change, move on, or admit failure.

With all due respect, if they are in boats they should have reg #s on them, the tip line really likes it when you give them license plates or reg #s, then they can follow up. I don't know exactly how it all works, but maybe they show up at the guys house later and see him fileting a pile of short fish or at least give him a good scare.

Gilly, great to hear that you've have good results with the tip line. The only way to get some guys to stop is to get them to realize the consequences.
